Maestà of Duccio di Buoninsegna

The Maestà, or Maestà of Duccio is an altarpiece composed of many individual paintings commissioned by the city of Siena in 1308 from the artist Duccio di Buoninsegna. The front panels make up a large enthroned Madonna and Child with saints and angels, and a predella of the Childhood of Christ with prophets. The reverse has the rest of a combined cycle of the Life of the Virgin and Life of Christ in a total of forty-three small scenes; several panels are now dispersed or lost. Though it took a generation for its effect truly to be felt, Duccio’s Maestà set Italian painting on a course leading away from the hieratic representations of Byzantine art towards more direct presentations of reality.

On the gilded surface of silver coins carried 22 scenes from the Passion of Christ and 4 scenes relating to the resurrection: – Entry into Jerusalem – The Last Supper – Washing of the Feet

Christ prophesied the betrayal students – Judas received 30 pieces of silver -Agony in the Garden

kiss of Judas – Jesus before Pontius Pilate – Jesus accused the Pharisees – Jesus before Caiaphas

outrage – Renunciation of the Apostle Peter -Jesus before Anna

Jesus to King Herod -The second meeting of Jesus and Pilate – Crowning with Thorns

flagellation – Pontius Pilate washes his hands -Stations of the Cross

Crucifixion – the central element of the composition -Deposition -interment -Myrrh-bearing women at the tomb -The Road to Emmaus – Noli me tangere, meaning “do not touch me” / “do not touch me”, is a Latin translation of the words -Christ in Limbo.
