Lunar Meteorite NWA 5000
A lunar meteorite is a meteorite that is known to have originated on the Moon. A meteorite hitting the Moon is normally classified as a transient lunar phenomenon. The NWA 5000 meteorite was Found in July 2007 in southern Morocco and provided to Adam Hupé in October 2007 by a Moroccan dealer. Meteorites from the Moon have been found on the Earth. They are chunks of rock that have been blasted from the lunar surface by asteroid impacts. Even a small telescope will reveal the cratered surface of Earth’s nearest neighbor. We know today that the craters are from asteroid impacts. Since the Moon has no atmosphere every rock that hits the surface hits at full cosmic speed. Sometimes pieces are launched from the ground at speed that allow them to escape the Moon. They wander like or rocks waiting to be captured by Earth’s gravity.
