The obverse contains the State Emblem of Papua New Guinea that features a bird-of-paradise over a traditional spear and a kundu drum. The inscriptions denoting the name of the issuing country as well as the issuing year are indicated along the rim of the silver coin.
The reverse displays two mother of pearl cranes against the nature landscape background. Found all over the world, cranes are long-beaked birds that to grow to an average of 1 meter in height. There are 15 different species of crane found on Earth today. They are found on every continent with the exceptions of the Antarctic and South America, where they are found inhabiting the temperate wetlands and swamps throughout the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
