Description
VICTORIA AND NIKE Goddess
THE GREEK GODDESS NIKE was a patron of athletes and warriors. In Ancient Greece, she was depicted as a beautiful winged woman holding an olive twig in her hand. Origins of her worship date back to the ancient Olympic Games. Over time, Nike became a symbol of triumph appearing on monuments commemorating great military victories.
VICTORIA, THE ROMAN EQUIVALENT OF NIKE, was the epitome of success and military strength of the Roman Empire. Numerous temples were erected in honor of the beautiful goddess. The effigy of a winged young woman holding a laurel wreath in her hand was often used in applied arts of the Imperium Romanum, including ancient Roman coinage.
