Virgin of Vladimir
The Theotokos of Vladimir also known as Our Lady of Vladimir, Vladimir Mother of God, or Virgin of Vladimir and “The Vladimir Madonna” – is one of the most venerated Orthodox icons and a typical example of Eleusa Byzantine iconography. The Theotokos (Greek word for Virgin Mary, literally meaning “Birth-Giver of God”) is regarded as the holy protectress of Russia. About 1131 the Greek Patriarch Luke Chrysoberges of Constantinople sent the icon as a gift to the Grand Duke of Kiev. It was kept in he Mezhyhirskyi Monastery until it was brought it to the city Vladimir, in 1155. To house the icon, the Assumption Cathedral was built there, followed by other churches dedicated to the Virgin throughout Ukraine. In 1395, during Tamerlane’s invasion, the image was taken from Vladimir to the new capital, Moscow.
The 2013 issue of “Masterpieces of Art – Premium Edition”, this coin is expected to sell out in no time, due to extremely limited mintage and the huge request by worldwide collectors. Silver, gold removable bar, 26 original Swarovski crystals, a book, a wooden icon to wish lucky and prosperity, all inside a luxury case, make this coin a very exclusive numismatic jewel. The reverse depicts Queen Elizabeth II profile.
